Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between a DNP in Nursing and a PhD in Nursing?

If you’re seeking a terminal degree in nursing, you can pursue either a Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) in Nursing or a PhD in Nursing. However, the focus of each degree differs slightly. A DNP emphasizes direct patient care and the application of evidence-based practices in health care settings, making it a good fit for prospective and current APRNs. A PhD in Nursing focuses on scientific and scholarly research, with less emphasis on patient care.

Can you apply to an online DNP program without nursing leadership experience?

The online FNP, DNP program at The University of Tulsa welcomes rising nurse leaders who are ready to develop their skills in administration and management. The only specific requirements to enroll in the online DNP program include documentation of an active, unencumbered registered nurse license (at least one year of practice) and a BSN from a regionally accredited nursing program.

How do practicum hours work in an online DNP program?

To build on the concepts you’ll learn in your online courses, our FNP, DNP program requires 1,000 hands-on practicum hours. TU allows you to coordinate your own practicum in your local area and select a preceptor who’s best for you and your schedule.

How does the FNP, DNP program prepare graduates for APRN roles?

The FNP, DNP program at TU provides advanced clinical training and leadership skills to practice at the highest level of nursing as an APRN. Our DNP program allows you to focus on a specialized APRN area before seeking licensure. While our program offers the Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP) track, some additional APRN specialty areas include Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist (CRNA), Certified Nurse-Midwife (CNM), and Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP).
